DNA Profile Could Help Identify Central Florida Human Remains Found in 2006

A DNA profile could help identify Central Florida human remains that were found in 2006.

Volusia County Sheriff’s detectives are hoping DNA extraction may lead to the identification of human remains found in the DeLand area in 2006.

VSO is partnering with Othram Inc., a forensic genetic genealogy firm that specializes in identifying remains, to analyze and research the case.

The remains were found in January 2006 in a wooded area in DeLand. Detectives determined the deceased was an adult white male who stood about 6’1″ tall.

At the time, details of the case were entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs).

In 2017, a composite sketch was created and released to the public to show how the victim may have looked during his life.

His identity remains a mystery 18 years later.

In October 2023, VSO teamed with Othram Labs to leverage advanced DNA testing and genetic genealogy to pursue leads. Othram agreed to attempt the DNA extraction at a reduced cost, with the hope of raising money through their crowdfunding campaign if the DNA extraction was successful.

The good news is the extraction was a success, and now Othram is conducting genetic research in an attempt to make an identification.

The Volusia Sheriff’s Office has funded a portion of the cost of this research. If you’d like to make a contribution to help Othram Labs continue their work, you can donate online.

If you have information that could help in the investigation, please contact Crime Stoppers of North East Florida at 888-277-TIPS, or use P3Tips on the mobile app, referencing case 06-866. You could receive a reward for your information, and you can remain anonymous.
