DNA Match Leads to Murder Indictment in 2019 Orange County Homicide

A DNA match led to a murder indictment in a 2019 Orange County homicide case.

An Orange County grand jury formally indicted 30-year-old Gary Brumfield for First Degree Murder (with a Weapon) for a 2019 homicide.

On July 13, 2019, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office discovered the body of 58-year-old Vera Jones in a home in the 4000 block of West Jackson Street. The medical examiner determined the woman died from multiple skull fractures with contributing factors of multiple stab wounds.

Deputies developed Brumfield as a suspect. Detectives interviewed him and took his DNA.

On November 25, 2019, Brumfield’s DNA results came back and matched DNA found at the scene. Deputies arrested him later that day.

On August 28th, the State Attorney’s office presented sufficient evidence to a grand jury to secure an indictment against Brumfield for First Degree Murder (with a Weapon).
