In an effort to break the impasse over teacher pay increases, the Orange County School District sent a letter Thursday, to the Orange County Classroom Teachers Association, proposing that the appointment of a Special Magistrate be bypassed and the matter be taken directly to the School Board.
An impasse on salary negotiations was declared last Thursday, after both sides were unable to reach agreement.
Normally, the impasse resolution process requires the appointment of a Special Magistrate to hear the positions of the parties, making a recommendation to the School Board for resolving the impasse. However, such a process could take 2-3 months. Also, additional time too, is needed to schedule the final impasse resolution meeting before the School Board.
In their letter, the District said, it is agreeable to shortening the impasse period.
Florida law allows for the parties to waive the hearing in front of the Special Magistrate and to proceed directly to a hearing before the school board to resolve the impasse.
The Orange County Classroom Teachers Association has 7 days to respond to the District’s letter.
