A gunman who terrorized a community and shot multiple times at a law enforcement officer in Cocoa on Monday night was shot dead by a Brevard County Deputy Sheriff.
Witnesses told investigators that a suspect, later identified as Cedrick Lamont Bishop, 30, of Cocoa, began shooting in a residential area around 9:00 p.m. One of the gunman’s bullets entered a home occupied by children.
A Deputy Sheriff, Nick Worthy, arriving in the area of Moss Lane and Aurora Road, encountered the suspect who began shooting at his marked patrol car.
As Deputy Worthy exited his patrol car, gunfire was exchanged, as the suspect began advancing toward him.
Investigators say, the suspect confronted Deputy Worthy at the rear of his patrol car whereupon the Deputy Sheriff responded to the attack with deadly force.
Bishop was transported to the Weusthoff Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Bishop had a lengthy and violent criminal history to include, burglary, attempted robbery and cocaine possession, aggravated battery with a firearm and discharging a firearm in public.
Investigators say, there were no injuries reported as a result of Bishop’s actions, although a number of crime scenes were identified throughout the neighborhood where he had illegally discharged his firearm.
As is customary, Deputy Worthy has been placed on paid administrative leave, pending an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
