An Orange County Sheriff’s deputy who was speeding in her patrol car when she crashed into a vehicle killing an elderly man, was fired from her job on Friday.
Deputy Sheriff Melinda Miller was served with a notice of termination on July 1, after a report by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Professional Standards Section (PSS) concluded she had violated the agency’s procedures, while responding in an emergency situation.
D/S Miller was found to be driving at 86 miles per hour in a 40 mph zone when she collided with 91-year-old Edward Soistman’s vehicle on August 17, on Magnolia Homes Road near Altamonte Springs, last year. Soistman subsequently died of his injures.
An earlier investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol found D/S Millier at fault in the crash and noted she was driving “at a high rate of speed…and not utilizing her vehicle’s overhead emergency lighting equipment.”
D/S Miller, who was re-assigned to administrative duties following the crash, plans to appeal her notice of termination.
