Deputies Shoot Attempted Robbery Suspect on Fairbanks Road

A man is in jail for attempting to burglarize a home and attempting to run down a couple of deputies, while fleeing the scene. Deputies opened fire on the suspect after he deliberately rammed a Deputy Sheriff’s squad car on west Fairbanks Road on Saturday morning.

Brian L. Lawson

According to Orange County Sheriff’s Office, on Saturday around 11:29 am, a 911 call was received from a resident at 1048 west Fairbanks Road.  The caller advised that an unknown suspect was attempting to gain entry to the home by kicking down the front doo

When deputies arrived at the scene they observed the suspect getting in the passenger seat of a vehicle parked in the driveway.  The first unit on the scene parked behind the suspect’s vehicle as two other units approached on foot.  The driver of the vehicle, a female, was ordered by deputies to step out of the car.  The female complied with the deputy’s directions, the suspect did not.  He instead took control of the driver seat, placed the vehicle in reverse and rammed the deputy’s vehicle twice while the deputy was still inside the car.  The two deputies that where on foot continued to order the suspect out of the vehicle, but he continued to use deadly force.  The suspect placed the vehicle in drive, accelerated the car and headed directly toward the deputies.  The deputies, in fear for their lives opened fire on the suspect as they moved out of the way, to keep from being struck.

The suspect fled the scene and deputies pursued the vehicle for approximately 3 miles onto Elmhertz Street.  The suspect ditched the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.  He ran into the back yard of a residence where the Orange County Sheriff’s Office K-9 and Aviation Unit were able to track him.  The suspect was ordered to surrender and again refused.  The K-9 dog was unleashed and the suspect received a dog bite on his arm.   Once the suspect was apprehended it was determined he suffered a gunshot wound to the hand. He was transported to the Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The suspect was identified as Brian Lamar Lawson, 36 years of Eatonville.

At the request of Sheriff Jerry Demings, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) will be conducting the deputy involved shooting investigation.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office Professional Standard Section will also conduct an investigation.  As per policy, the deputies involved will be on administrative reassignment for a minimum of one week
