Orange County Sheriff’s deputies are trying to identify a man whom they believe stole an officer’s Taser, after it was accidentally dropped during the apprehension of an unruly motorist last Thursday. A woman at the scene of the altercation, who initially picked up the Taser, told deputies she had given it to a man who had identified himself as a law enforcement officer.
Deputies say, two Orange County Sheriff’s deputies became involved with a physical altercation with a man during a traffic stop on January 13, at 2013 South Orange Blossom Trail, around 1:30 a.m. During the struggle with the violent suspect, one of the deputies dropped his issued agency Taser/Electronic Control Device (ECD), while assisting the other deputy.
While the suspect was apprehended some distance away, upon returning to the original crime scene to recover the taser, deputies learned that a woman had taken the weapon.
The woman was quickly identified, deputies say. She told deputies that she had given the weapon to a man who had identified himself as an undercover law enforcement officer.
Investigators will like the public’s help in trying to identify a man seen leaving the area on video provided by the store’s surveillance cameras.
