The Democratic National Committee said Thursday that conservative political spending organizations have spent $1.2 million supporting Republican Marco Rubio in Florida’s U.S. Senate race, part of a nationwide influx of foreign corporate cash aimed at helping the GOP in the campaign’s homestretch.
The spending comes from American Crossroads and Crossroads GPS, directed by Karl Rove and former Minnesota Republican Senator Norm Coleman’s American Action Network.
In many cases, organizations spending heaviest to defeat Democrats are established under IRS tax codes which shield the identity of their contributors.
Joining Democrats in condemning the spending was Florida independent Charlie Crist, who sent out a fund-raising appeal Thursday.
“Don’t let Tea Party candidate Marco Rubio and his party bosses destroy what we’ve accomplished,” Crist told prospective donors. “Karl Rove has already spent more than a quarter-million dollars to flood our airwaves with misleading attacks.”
