Democrats Claim Republican ‘Authoritarian Power Grab’ in Orange County

Democrats are claiming a Republican “authoritarian power grab” is targeting Orange County.

Democrats are upset by recent actions by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Attorney General James Uthmeier and other state officials that the Democratic Party calls ongoing efforts to undermine local democracy. These include threats to remove Mayor Jerry Demings and County Commissioners over immigration and ICE issues, a DOGE audit analyzing local spending, and the state’s rejection of the community Vision 2050 plan.

“Gov. DeSantis and Attorney General Uthmeier are once again abusing the power of their offices to punish Orange County for leading with compassion, integrity, and independence, at a time when our community needs it most,” Orange County Democratic Party Chair Samuel Vilchez Santiago said in a statement. He said Republicans are directly attacking “our county, our values, and our people.”

Governor DeSantis and other Republicans have said their actions are intended to work to cut waste within state government, save taxpayers money, and ensure accountability in Florida. The Democrats pledged to stand by local elected officials, saying the Democratic Party is “proud to stand with them as they navigate these unprecedented and undemocratic attacks.”

“This is what authoritarianism looks like: punishing those who think differently, silencing dissent, and rewriting the rules to stay in control,” local Democratic Party Chair Samuel Vilchez Santiago added. “It’s wrong and dangerous. This is an attempt to undermine democracy at the local level, and it should alarm every Floridian, regardless of political party. The Orange County Democratic Party will not stay silent in the face of authoritarianism. We are committed to defending our community, our leaders, and the right of voters to decide who governs them.”

Now add to all this, Governor DeSantis had the Orlando rainbow crosswalk repainted, causing Democrats to go into another panic and focusing on divisive social issues.

Republicans would argue they dominate Sunshine State politics, meaning voters statewide support the Governor, Attorney General and others. Despite the heated rhetoric, Republicans charge ahead with all of their efforts, and Democrats say they will continue to fight.
