The Democratic Party responded to former President Donald Trump’s recent Florida abortion amendment comments.
Florida Democrats say the former Republican President is “running away from his record on reproductive rights,” giving confusing statements to voters about his position on abortion.
President Trump indicated he is against the current Florida six-week abortion ban, saying that he thinks people need more time than six weeks. But the Republican added that he was also voting against Amendment 4, which would limit government interference with abortion.
The Florida Democratic Party places the blame on Republicans and Donald Trump, and Democrats issued a response to an interview Trump did with NBC News where he indicated that he does not support Florida’s six-week abortion ban to discuss the issue with voters.
“Floridians know exactly how we got here,” said FDP Chair Nikki Fried. “Trump has repeatedly bragged about overturning Roe v. Wade and now, he’s attempting to run away from his record on reproductive rights because he knows that abortion bans are extremely unpopular.”
Democrats are hoping to put Florida in play, as they also challenge incumbent Republican Senator Rick Scott, using the abortion issue to rally pro-choice voters to the polls.
“When I’m president and Congress passes a bill to restore reproductive freedom, I will proudly sign it into law,” Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris said in a statement. “The choice in this election is clear.”
The Florida Democratic Party also reminded voters that Governor Ron DeSantis and the Republican legislature made this a reality in the state and urged Floridians to vote yes on Amendment 4 in November. Former President Trump has been clear he wants individual states to decide the issue, not the federal government.
“Because of Donald Trump, Floridians are living under one of the most restrictive 6-week abortion bans in the country,” FDP Chair Nikki Fried continued. “It’s a dangerous ban with virtually no exceptions, which puts women’s lives at risk and threatens doctors with prosecution. The majority of Floridians opposed the 6-week ban, yet Ron and Florida Republicans were quick to sign it into law.
“Florida voters won’t be fooled by Donald Trump’s lies. It’s time to hold every Republican accountable for enacting Florida’s extreme 6-week ban and the only way to do that is to vote yes on Amendment 4 and send Kamala Harris and Tim Walz to the White House in November.”
