The Florida Democratic Party attacked Florida Republicans for their continued failure to agree on a state budget.
Florida Democrats said the Republican legislature is acting like a bunch of “spoiled children” and that the inability to pass a budget is an embarrassment.
The Florida House passed a resolution to extend legislative session through the end of June due to their inability to agree with the Senate on a budget. The Florida Senate did not meet to consider this resolution.
“Florida Republicans continue to act like spoiled children,” said Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried. “Speaker Perez and President Albritton can’t even agree on a total budget number, much less the details. Their inability to pass a budget is an embarrassment to this state and an insult to the people they were elected to serve.”
Republican Speaker Daniel Perez sent a memo to members of the Florida House of Representatives on May 234rd saying: ” We continue working closely with the Senate toward a final budget agreement. At this time, you should not expect to be in Tallahassee next week. Additional updates will be shared as progress continues and the timeline becomes clearer. We will ensure you have the necessary notice to make travel and scheduling arrangements when the time comes.”
“Florida’s affordability crisis is hurting the people of this state,” FDP Chair Nikki Fried added. “Florida Republicans need to stop wasting their time with political games and get back to work. It’s past time for them to do their damn jobs.”
Earlier this month, the Republican Speaker blamed the Republicans in the Senate and President Ben Albritton for blowing up the budget deal. In a May 9th memo, the Speaker said: “The Senate President informed me this week that he is breaking his commitment to the House that he publicly announced from the Senate rostrum. I was disappointed when the Senate President informed me of his decision to no longer bring the House’s historic tax proposal to the Senate floor. As I’m sure you can appreciate, this blew up the framework for the budget deal we had negotiated.”
