Former Orlando Police Chief and former Congressional candidate Val Demings said Monday, Floridians have an obligation to remain vigilant and ensure that all who are eligible to vote, have the right to do so.

Demings, who spoke at a rally outside the Orange County Supervisor of Elections Office said, there are no “do-overs” when an eligible citizen is denied the right to vote. She was particularly critical of Gov. Rick Scott’s attempt to purge eligible voters from Florida’s voting rolls in the lead up to the November 2012 Presidential Election.

“Gov. Rick Scott, in his desperate effort to change the outcome of elections, his last purge attempt was a spectacular and costly failure,” she said. “We know Gov. Scott’s purge list included hundreds and hundreds of citizens who should never have been on the list in the first place.”  Over 82% on Scott’s purge list were people of color, she said.

Demings’ call for Floridians to remain engaged and not let the 2012 election debacle repeat itself, came moments before Secretary of State Ken Detzner, who is on a statewide ‘Project Integrity’ tour, was slated to hold a public meeting with area Supervisors of Elections, on the maintenance of good voters’ lists.

Asked whether she had confidence that Detzner’s ‘integrity tour’ would yield to eligible voters having an opportunity to exercise that right in upcoming elections, Demings, who stressed that voter fraud ought to be taken seriously, had this to say: “I am encouraged by the fact that the Secretary of State is taking the time to get out and tour and listen to the voters. That’s a good step in the right direction. What kind of tour this ends up being, remains to be seen.”

Demings praised Supervisors of Elections whom she said spoke up to ensure that every eligible voter had the right to exercise their vote.  “I am an enforcer of the law and I have little or no tolerance for persons who violate the law.”

Demings, invited by Florida For All to headline today’s rally, didn’t tip her hand when asked whether she is considering jumping into the Orange County Mayor’s race.  “I am considering all of my options and running for mayor is one of them,” she said.  Demings also said that running again for a seat in the U.S. Congress, was “still a part of that.”
