US Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Weston, Florida will remain Chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, senior party officials are saying out of Washington DC.
Even though the DNC is technically independent from the President, this means President Barack Obama is clearly willing to ask members of the DNC to approve Wasserman Schultz as his pick to lead the party. The DNC will meet the day after the inauguration.
Wasserman Schultz became Chairwoman in the middle of 2011 when former DNC Chair Tim Kaine stepped down to run for US Senate. Kaine won in November and is the new Senator from Virginia. With news that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi would stay in the top post in the US House, speculation mounted about where DWS would end up. She has gained national attention and a higher profile in the role.
Wasserman Schultz was also re-elected to the US House in November overwhelmingly.
