Orange County Sheriff’s deputies are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a Wekiva High School football player on Tuesday afternoon.
According to deputies, the Sheriff’s office was notified by the Orange County Fire Department (OCFD) that a student was transported to the Florida Hospital from the Wekiva HS football practice field.
Deputies responded to the Wekiva High School at 2501 N. Hiawassee Road around 4: 12 pm today, where they learned that a 15-year-old male freshman team football player had fallen ill and collapsed on the practice field. Lifesaving efforts began on the scene and 911-Orange County Fire Rescue was notified for assistance. The student was transported by OCFR to Florida Hospital for continued treatment, but the youngster did not respond to additional life saving attempts and succumbed at the hospital.
Investigators will be interviewing witnesses who may offer some insight as to how the circumstances unfolded and will be conducting a death investigation.
Deputies have not released the name of the football student. So far, the cause of death, is not known.
