Food stamps cuts could lead to riots, says Food Bank CEO

Margarette Purvis, the president and CEO of the Food Bank for New York City, told Salon.com that the expiration of stimulus funds, which will see the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program reduced by $5 billion dollars, will have an “immediate impact” and represent a recipe for civil unrest.

Purvis said that the looming cut would mean about 76 million meals “that will no longer be on the plates of the poorest families” in NYC alone.

About 3.6 million Floridians who currently receive food stamps will see a reduction in benefits, beginning November 1st.
