Gov. Charlie Crist said Monday he has hit his $100,000 fund-raising target set for the opening days of his no-party-affiliated campaign for U.S. Senate.
Crist broke with the Florida Republican Party two weeks ago and has been forced to retool his fund-raising effort into one driven by smaller contributions and social networking. But trying to get a fast-start, Crist set a May 10 deadline for raising $100,000. In an e-mail to supporters Monday, Crist said the campaign has topped the goal.
“Our success in meeting this challenge is reflective of the broad supporter for our central message that politics as usual in Washington is no longer acceptable,” Crist wrote.
The Florida Republican Party also appears to be facing a deadline of its own – with its eBay auction sale of Crist’s portrait.
The auction, already shutdown once following a dispute with eBay, has been relaunched and drawn a $6,600 high bid. The sale is scheduled to end Friday evening.
