Cops Unveil Newest Vehicle in Fight Against Drunk Driving

On Friday, Winter Haven police unveiled the newest vehicle to their fleet – part police cruiser, part taxi – in their fight against drunk drivers.

The 2004 Crown Victoria Patrol car is part of the “Choose Your Ride” public awareness campaign aimed at highlighting the high cost of driving after consuming alcohol.

City officials, community leaders and representatives from the Polk County Chapter of MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) helped unveil the vehicle during today’s ceremony at the Police Department.

The part police cruiser, part taxi has markings outlining the estimated costs of a first-offense DUI. These include, fines and court costs, DUI school and treatment, attorneys fees and increased insurance totaling an estimated $7,600. These costs don’t include the loss of wages from work, any surcharges or the time spent performing Community service. All prices are subject to change without notice.

The cost to ride in the converted cruiser compared to the typical cab fare of $20 is a no brainer.

“With the economy on everyone’s mind, it’s only fitting to put a price on our choices,” said Police Chief Gary Hester. “Anyone would see that $20 is a much safer investment after a time of consuming alcohol than choosing to get behind the wheel of a vehicle.”
