As Need Rises, Obama and Congress to Cut Food Stamps Program

Even as more and more Americans are relying on the federal government’s food stamps to survive, Congress is looking to cut the multi-billion dollar assistance program.

The House Appropriations Committee on Wednesday will review the fiscal year 2012 appropriations bill for the Department of Agriculture that includes $71 billion for that agency’s “Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program”, (SNAP), reports abcnews.com

The $71 billion program represents an increase of 9 percent over 2011, which critics have said is too large in view of the sizable budget deficit.

Approximately 44.5 million Americans relied on the food stamps program  in March, an increase of about 11 percent from one year ago and up by 61 percent from the same time four years ago.
