Community Invited to Harry P. Leu Gardens 50th Birthday Bash

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orlando City Commissioners invite the local community to attend a celebration for the 50th birthday of Harry P. Leu Gardens on Monday, November 7, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. The event will begin with a tree planting and dedication near Mary Jane’s Rose Garden, which was named for the wife of Harry P. Leu. After the ceremony, guests will receive free tree seedlings and horticultural staff will be available to answer gardening questions.

Leu Gardens was given to the City of Orlando in 1961 by Harry P. Leu and today attracts 160,000 visitors annually including local families, wedding guests and international travelers. Leu Gardens provides visitors with opportunities to enjoy garden landscapes featuring 8,000 different species of temperate and tropical plants and hosts dozens of events each year including, “Date Night at Leu Gardens,” “Storytime at Leu Gardens,” and “Leu’s Holiday House.”

Leu Gardens also serves as an educational resource for the community by promoting environmental awareness through year-round horticultural programs. Visitors of the garden can also access an extensive reference library that houses more than 2000 volumes of gardening and botany books.

The event is free to the public and there is no charge for garden admission during the birthday celebration.
