On August 22nd, Community Food & Outreach Center (CFOC) will host a back to school event with a difference.
The CFOC’s Look Out School, Here We Come! shares the cost of school supplies with pre-qualified families. With over 100 children registered for Saturday’s event, the focus will be on empowering rather than enabling the community’s poor and low-income population.
“With good intentions, many have tried to help people by giving them something for nothing,” says CFOC Executive Director Eric Gray. “While handouts may help people survive, long term use doesn’t lead people to independence. At Community Food and Outreach Center, we strive to empower those we serve with a hand up, not a hand out.”
The organization is offering backpacks stuffed with all the items off the Orange County School Supply List for $5 (Valued at $50).
Families who are pre-qualified based on their income level have registered for the event in advance and will enjoy a dignified shopping experience where they will have the opportunity to personally select their child’s backpack and additional supplies, receive complimentary walk-in haircuts on-site and enjoy lunch and entertainment at the CFOC 150 W. Michigan Street campus in downtown Orlando.
