The Common Core, “a broad curriculum standard” for public education should be implemented in Florida schools next year. But, while Florida and many other states signed on initially, grass-roots activists and an array of groups and citizens are having second thoughts.
Supporters of Common Core say, there needs to be a uniform set of knowledge that students across the country should master, thus enabling them to compete in a global economy. Opponents fear that the federal government would dictate the content taught in every school and development of curriculum by local school officials would be lost, once Common Core Standards are adopted.
Florida is among 45 states that agreed to adopt Core Standards, but renewed debate and protests may delay its implementation, according to thefloridacurrent.com.
