Text of Commissioner Tiffany Moore Russell’s address to Graduates
It is with great pleasure that I address the Class of 2009 graduates of Central Florida, their families, and friends.
Before I begin I would like to offer special congratulations to the parents and guardians of the graduates. As a new mother, I recognize the investment made by each of you and for that–you should be acknowledged. Even when things did not always go according to plan, you never lost confidence in your graduates’ ability to do well. No matter what path your graduates have chosen, you have been there for them over the long haul—supporting them and encouraging them at every turn. On behalf of the graduates, I want to thank you for your loyalty and for your love.
Today, however, belongs chiefly to the graduates, considering all you have accomplished from your time here completing your secondary education. It is my hope that you have gained a sense of self-confidence at having succeeded at such a difficult task. You have probably worked harder here than ever before with the research papers, the exams, the projects, the bells all seemingly unending. But most of you have achieved more than you thought you could, at least in part because you worked at it—and worked hard, but it does not stop here.
Although, there will be leaders along the way that will help guide and support you, please be reminded that your course as you move forward in life will encounter much uncertainty. The steps you choose to take must continually be learned along the way. That is why it is so important to be mindful, to listen, and to respond, because even in uncertainty, you will be responsible for your steps. Take advantage of the guidance you receive along the way, because wisdom is priceless—but never forget the path traveled that got you there.
I hope you will feel a continuing bond with your community when you leave this arena today. I hope that you will remember the role it played in making you who you are and what you have yet to become. No matter where your journey ends, whether it’s near or far, I ask that each of you consider service to others—not because it is easy, but because it is hard, rewarding, and very necessary.
One final word—set your sights high. It does no harm except to your ego to fail sometimes. It is a fact that you will miss 100% of the shots you never take; so never be afraid to take your best shot.
Thank you, good luck, and God bless,
