Orange County District 6 Commissioner Tiffany Moore Russell invites citizens to the annual “School Days Are Here Again” event to help prepare area children for the start of the new school year. The back to school event, co-hosted by the Chris Johnson Foundation and Senator Geraldine Thompson will be held Saturday, August 16, 2014 from 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Barnett Park.
The goal of “School Days Are Here Again” is to equip students with the resources they need to be successful in the upcoming school year. In addition to providing free school supplies, several community partners will be on site to provide information concerning recreational and educational opportunities for young people throughout the school year. Additionally, there will be a health fair in collaboration with the school supply give-away to offer free school physicals on the day of the event courtesy of Orange County PCAN, Florida Hospital and the University of Central Florida Medical School. Each participant can also enjoy free snow-cones, popcorn, and an opportunity to win one of 20 free bicycles donated by Wal-Mart.
“Please join me in my efforts to ensure our youth has each and every one of their needs met for this upcoming school year,” said Commissioner Moore Russell. “We are preparing to serve 500 youth; many of whom would otherwise not be in a position to afford school supplies due to circumstances out of their control.”
Each year approximately 1,300 age-appropriate backpacks are given away filled with school supplies. Parents and guardians planning to attend must pre-register by calling 407-836-5860. Commissioner Moore Russell is also seeking volunteers.
