At the City of Orlando Council meeting today, Mayor Buddy Dyer paid tribute to Hispanic citizens, noting that from September 15, through October 15, America will celebrate the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean.
In honoring the proud history and rich culture of Hispanic Americans in Orlando, Dyer proclaimed September 15 through October 15, “Hispanic Heritage Month,” and observed that “cultural heritage” is something that must be recognized, valued, celebrated and shared.
To celebrate the influence of Hispanic culture, Dyer, Commissioner Tony Ortiz (District 2), and the City of Orlando will host the 5th annual City of Orlando Hispanic Heritage Month kickoff on Thursday, September 15, at City Hall, Downtown Orlando. The kickoff will feature food from local Hispanic vendors as well as a showcase of Hispanic art and performances. Also, this year, there will be a special focus on Latinos and in particular Brazilians, who now contribute substantially to Orlando’s tourism receipts.
Ortiz, in his remarks, lauded the great Hispanic cultural heritage and observed that, the month-long celebration “reminds us of who we are as a people.” He underscored the importance of “unity” among all peoples.
Dyer took the opportunity today, to recognize members of the Hispanic community who are working along with the City on the kickoff event and other celebrations throughout the month.
