Another major sporting event will be hosted at the Citrus Bowl, currently under reconstruction – the Cure Bowl.
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer made the announcement Wednesday, saying the Cure Bowl will be played at the renovated Citrus Bowl on December 19, 2015. Some of the funds raised from the Cure Bowl game will be directed to breast cancer research.
Dyer also said that the game will host teams from the American Athletic Conference – of which UCF is a member – and the Sun Belt Conference.
The Citrus Bowl already hosts the Champs Sports Bowl and the Capital One Bowl.
On Tuesday, city, county and sports leaders announced that Amway Center will be the site of the 2016 and 2017 American Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Championships.
“We are pleased to bring our 2016 and 2017 men’s basketball championships to the City of Orlando, the state-of-the-art Amway Center and the community that is home to the Fiesta Bowl Champion UCF Knights,” said American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco, Tuesday, in making the announcement.
All eleven American Athletic Conference schools will participate in the 2016 and 2017 championships.
The American Athletic Conference placed four teams in the 2014 NCAA Championship, including UConn, which went on to win the national title.
The 2014-15 season will be the second straight year in which the American Athletic Conference has the defending men’s and women’s NCAA champions in its ranks.
