Citizens to be recognized for Crime Prevention efforts

Recognition Ceremony for Orlando residents--2009

Mayor Buddy Dyer, Orlando City Commissioners and Orlando Police Department Chief Val B. Demings, will recognize the dedicated efforts of Neighborhood Watch Block Captains on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at the Harry P. Leu Gardens.  The event will take place from 11:00am – 1:00pm.  This is the 25th year that Orlando has recognized the role citizens play in crime prevention. Neighborhood Watch Block Captains represent approximately 750 streets and 30,000 homes.  Concerned Orlando residents worked with the Orlando Police Departments Neighborhood Watch Staff and Community Liaison officers to create 110 new watch areas during 2009.

Since 1993, Orlando has placed in the top ten among 50 states participating in the National Night Out crime prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watches.  For the past three years, Orlando earned 2nd place nationally in the population category of 100,000 to 249,999.  Orlando residents held 76 National Night Out block parties making it a record year for citizen participation.
