An Orange County Sheriff’s deputy was arrested Tuesday, accused of stealing $50 from a vehicle at the Walt Disney World Hollywood Studios parking lot.
Deputy Kirk Smurawa, 40, has been charged with one count of armed burglary and one count of petit theft.
Smurawa was caught during a “covert tactical surveillance operation” and while on duty – in uniform and armed with his handgun – removing the victim’s purse from a vehicle.
According to his arrest affidavit, he was captured on surveillance video entering the victim’s vehicle, removing her wallet and taking it back to his patrol car.
Officers had been tipped off earlier to the deputy’s patrol activities.
When confronted, Smurawa confessed to taking the purse and removing cash from two small children’s wallets he had located in the victim’s purse. A grand total of $50.00 was removed.
The deputy has been relieved of duty without pay and his law enforcement credentials have been revoked pending an administrative review.
He was booked into the Orange County Jail early on Wednesday morning. Smurawa, a 10-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, was released on bond.
The Sheriff’s Office said the surveillance video would not be released at this time as it is part of the ongoing criminal investigation.
What in the heck is wrong with Florida and its public servants. Is there something in the water or is the gene pool so polluted that there are not enough nondepraved souls to fill Florida’s public servant jobs? It seems as if the February 2012 corruption report “hit the nail on the head”. If it’s not a code enforcement officer, then it’s a health inspector, if it’s a not a health inspector, then it’s a deputy, if it’s not a deputy, then it’s a judge, and it goes on and on. I’m glad to see these people being caught, but now it’s time to start doling out some severe punishments…it’s time to start “lowering the hammer” on all the miscreants that abuse their government positions. Evidently, regarding concern for the consequences that result from failing to honor pledged oaths and failing to abide by the law, there is nowhere near enough fear in the hearts of Florida’s public servants. Me thinks that too many years of operating with impunity like a “cowboy” unchecked has spoiled the ranks.
