Youngsters taught discipline at Basketball Academy

Wednesday evening, at the Smith Community Center, Commissioner Samuel Ings and the Facilities Manger, Marlon Poteat, Coaches, and Board Members unveiled a wonderful program for the youth in District 6. There were over 50 males and females children, who had uniforms on with Chucky Atkins Basketball Academy on the shirts.

There were different age groups at the ceremony, but one thing for sure all the children were smiling and something special was happening. Not only were the children showing off their new uniforms, but also everyone there was showing that they cared. The parents were proud of their children, and the coaches were proud with the opportunity too work with the children.

After all the children were introduced, Commissioner Ings gave his welcoming remarks, and everyone said the pledge of allegiance to the flag. After the pledge of allegiance, Commissioner Ings took a few minutes to tell the parents, the significance of the program.

“The goal of the program is to teach our children sportsmanship and discipline. By learning the fundamentals of the game, the children will become better students and citizens. This program will also be a deterrent of crime, and also help the student with their schoolwork.”

Chucky Atkins grew up in Orlando and he is playing for the Detroit Pistons, but his heart is still at home.
