Child Struck by Car in Brevard, in Critical Condition

A 10-year-old child is in critical condition after being struck by a car on Tuesday, on South Tropical Trail, north of Pineda Causeway, Brevard County, Florida Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said that a 2005 Honda Civic, driven by Louis Martin Karg, 43, of Merritt Island was heading southbound on South Tropical Trail, north of Pineda Causeway, around 8:50 am on Tuesday.

David Yassa, 10, also of Merritt Island, was crossing on South Tropical Trail from his home’s driveway and did not see the vehicle.

Karg told troopers he had the glare of the sun in his eyes and could not see David running across the road. The front of Karg’s car struck the child.

David was airlifted to the Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando, in critical condition, troopers said.

FHP said that the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.

  1. I was there. Sun was NOT a factor. Speeding was a factor. Go to the Brevard County Clerk of the Court website and see his driving record. He has a long history of having a lead foot, careless driving, driving with suspended license and is still on probation for a DUI (reduced to Reckless) conviction. He lives (since 2002) less than a mile from where he hit this child, so he knows the speed limit, he knows the residential area and knows the current construction. Yet he still decided to exceed the speed limit. A child in in critical condition because he doesn’t have the ability to learn from his mistakes and the courts are too lenient.
