The first mounted police horse for the City of Orlando Mounted Patrol Unit has died at the age of 40 years.
Cheyenne, who was born on April 15, 1971, passed away on the morning of December 27, 2011, at 9:46 a.m. He was exactly 40.8 years old.
According to a statement by Orlando Police Department, based on conversations with Cheyenne’s owners and The Tennessee Walking Horse Breeder’s & Exhibitor’s Association, it is believed that he was the oldest Tennessee Walking Horse that has ever lived. Based upon research via the internet & Guinness World Book of Records, the owners also believe he was the oldest living horse.
OPD said that Cheyenne had not only a remarkable history, but also a remarkable life during his tenure with the Mounted Patrol. Since his retirement, OPD has acquired two more mounts, Cheyenne I & II.
