Chavez Wants Obama to Hand over Gitmo to Cuba

Firebrand Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez wants new U.S. President Barack Obama to return the military base of Guantanamo to Cuba.

His call comes almost a week after Obama signed an order stating that the controversial detention camp will be closed within a year, even though he has yet to disclose where the accused terrorists being held there will go.

Chavez for his part refused to be bothered with such intricacies, telling attendees at the World Social Forum in Brazil that the camp is on Cuban territory and should be returned to Cuba.

Chavez, considered to be anti-American by many, said he is also waiting for signs Obama will move away from U.S. “imperialism.”

The Venezuelan president`s call came on a day when a military judge in Guantanamo Bay denied the Obama administration’s request to delay proceedings for 120 days in the case of a detainee accused of planning the October 2000 attack on the USS Cole warship.

Judge James Pohl, an Army colonel, said the case against Abd al Rahim al-Nashiri, a Saudi citizen of Yemeni descent, would go ahead.
