Central Florida Deputy-Involved Shooting as Suspect Armed with Knife Choked Brother

There was a Central Florida deputy-involved shooting as the suspect armed with a knife choked his 7-year-old brother while wearing a motorcycle helmet and two tactical vests with ballistic plates.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputies recently responded to a call regarding a domestic violence incident in progress. The caller advised that the suspect, 27-year-old Mario Camacho, was armed with a knife and choking their 7-year-old brother.

Once on scene, the suspect barricaded himself with his brother in a back bedroom. Deputies heard the child screaming for help and kicked down the door. Deputies encountered the suspect, who was holding a knife and refusing to let go of the child. The suspect was wearing a motorcycle helmet and two tactical vests with ballistic plates.

After several commands to drop the knife, our deputy shot the suspect, rescuing the brother.

The suspect was transported to Brandon Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

HCSO reminded the community that if you or a loved one are in need of help and services, please call the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay at 211, which offers 24/7 support.

The deputy involved is 25-year-old Antonio Gonzalez, and has been with HCSO for just under six years, spending five years as a Detention Deputy and 11 months as a Law Enforcement Deputy.

He was placed on administrative leave with pay pending completion of the investigation.
