Caribbean Voters Rallying for Obama

Ninety percent of U.S.-based Caribbean voters polled by a Caribbean magazine say they will be voting for Senator Barack Obama on Tuesday.

The Everybody`s Magazine poll of 800 paid subscribers in 47 states and over 9,000 online, and found that some 91.9 percent said they will vote for Obama tomorrow compared to 6.1 percent for John McCain.

The majority were women between the ages of 26 and 55 and were born in the Caribbean.  Close to 70 percent said they feel that if Senator McCain wins the election, will be primarily because of racism and prejudice. But  64.8 percent felt that an Obama defeat would be attributed to color, racism and prejudice.

Caribbean-Americans were defined as U.S. voters who came from primarily the English speaking Caribbean and their American born children.

Since 1980, the magazine has been doing presidential polls via questionnaire mailed to subscribers across the U.S.

Everybody`s Magazine founder, Herman Hall, said the poll response was a bit higher than in previous presidential polls when about 86 percent of Caribbean-Americans said they would vote Democratic.

The exception was in 1984 when nearly 30 percent Caribbean-Americans voted for Ronald Reagan in his second term following the invasion of Grenada.

While largely ignored by the mainstream and candidates, Caribbean-Americans are regarded as a small but significant segment within the overall African-American or black population.

On Sunday night in Brooklyn, The Mighty Sparrow was among those leading a last minute get out the vote rally for Obama in Brooklyn, NY.
