Caribbean-born Parliamentarian Honored

Guyana-born British Parliamentarian Baroness Valerie Amos has received Ghana`s highest national award, the Order of Volta – Companion.

Amos became the first black woman to become a member of Britain`s House of Lords in 1997, when she was made a life peer by then Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Lauded for her foreign policy achievements, particularly within Africa, Amos was honored for helping alleviate poverty in Ghana.

Later this month, Amos, who recently became a visiting fellow at Oxford University`s  Centre for Corporate Reputation, will receive her sixth honorary doctorate, this one from the University of Birmingham.
