Cappies Review: Ocoee High School: A Funny Thing Happened On the Way To The Forum

A comedy, a musical, and set in ancient Roman times? A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum promises all of that and more. What more could anyone want from a show?

The storyline revolves around a slave, Pseudolus, and his quest for freedom. This entails only one thing: bring his master, Hero, and the courtesan from next door, Philia, together to be in love forever. Seems easy? However Philia is already sold to an egotistic Captain, Miles Gloriosus and every character only gets even further in the way of the two lovers. Running gags and hilarity ensues throughout the production.

The greatest thing about this production would have to be the energy expended by everyone on the stage. The whole cast was just beaming, excited to be there. It kept the show going at a good pace and really gave a reason to being drawn into it. The singing was all technically great, and even with the faltering orchestra, everyone was able to keep in time with his or her own song.

Francia Baez (Philia) gave off that lovely courtesan feel at the very beginning of the show, but when she opened her mouth to speak, she was absolutely adorable. She really did Philia justice. Also, Malik Harris, Corbin Markey, and Roger Daniels as the Proteons were hilarious. Each of them brought something funny and unique to the show. Most especially, all of the parts with the Eunuchs were pure hilarity.

The two-story set was great and was put to good use. This was particularly evident during the chasing sequence in the second act where, almost every character went pretty much frantic all over the stage.

All in all, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a good production and definitely amusing to view.
