One new additional elementary school and several renovation projects will mark the start of the new school year on August 23, 2010.
A new additional elementary school (Old Cheney/North Forsyth 86-E-E-2) located on Curtis Street between Dennis Street and Forsyth Road will be the temporary home of Azalea Park Elementary while the school is being renovated. The comprehensive renovation of Azalea Park Elementary is scheduled to be completed for the first day of school in August 2011.
“New schools and upgraded facilities provide safe learning and working environments for both students and teachers,” said Superintendent Ronald Blocker. “These improvements will certainly help the school district achieve its strategic vision to be the top producer of successful students in the nation.”
Improvements to Apopka High, Conway Middle, and Palm Lake Elementary will be completed when students and teachers return in August. West Orange Ninth Grade Center is being revitalized to ease classroom overcrowding at West Orange High School. Life-safety enhancements at Gotha, Hunter’s Creek and Piedmont Lakes middle schools are on schedule for completion this summer. By the end of the calendar year all phases of comprehensive renovations at Hunter’s Creek, MetroWest, Orange Center, Waterbridge elementary schools and a classroom addition at Gotha Middle School will be finished. The budgets for new facilities and improvements total more than $250 million.
“When students return to school our building program doesn’t go offline,” said Chief Facilities Officer Bob Proie. “We have 40 projects in the planning, design, construction and close-out pipeline, providing quality, student ready classrooms throughout Orange County.”
