On Friday, Alvin Moore, candidate for Orange County Commission District 2, expressed his alarm over what he is calling the “Culture of Corruption” that has spread to the District 2 race.
According to Moore, one of his opponents, State Representative Bryan Nelson, has accepted campaign contributions from indicted Orlando Orange County Expressway board member Scott Batterson and his associates.
“It’s bad enough that Nelson backs a U-Haul truck up to the Capital to bring Tallahassee special interest money back to Orange County, but for him to keep Batterson’s tainted money doesn’t pass the smell test,” Moore said, in a statement.
Moore urged Nelson to immediately return contributions from Batterson and anyone tied to him, including developer/attorney Jim Palmer and his law firm. A grand jury late Thursday charged Batterson with bribery and soliciting unlawful compensation as a public official as it relates to his ties to developer Jim Palmer.
Nelson has received 62% of his contributions from the insurance, banking and lobbying industries – the very companies that benefit from his position in the Legislature.
Nelson, a Republican from Apopka, is Chair of the Insurance and Banking Committee in the State House that regulates insurance and banking laws.
So the incumbent Commissioner in District 2 HATES money from outsiders when it comes to Orange County, but he is fine with his preferred successor rattling the cup in Tallahassee to fund his campaign. Disgusting double standard.
