In a close, 5-4 vote, the Broward School Board rejected $34 million it could have received under the $4.35 billion Race to the Top initiative, the centerpiece of the Obama administration’s education agenda.
Miami Herald: The Florida Department of Education had given school boards, superintendents and teachers unions until midnight Tuesday to agree in writing that — if Florida is awarded the money — districts and unions will implement the state’s plans for reforms.
By Tuesday night, 55 of the state’s 67 county school districts had signed on. That included Miami-Dade, where Superintendent Alberto Carvalho and School Board Chairman Solomon Stinson had signed and delivered the agreement by Tuesday’s deadline. Although the United Teachers of Dade had not signed on, it and the district would have three months after the money is awarded to agree to a plan for putting reforms into place.
