Boyfriend in Kissimmee Arrested for Abusing Infant

A Kissimmee man was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse of a 10-month-old baby boy, on Wednesday, Osceola County Sheriff’s detectives said.

Luis A. Guzman

Luis Angel Guzman, 20, was arrested after he told investigators that he playfully threw his girlfriend’s baby several times.

Detectives said that the investigation began on December 1st, around 12:26 am, when deputies responded to an apartment in the Cobblestone Apartment Complex.  At the apartment, deputies interviewed the mother of a 10-month-old baby who indicated her son was gasping for air and then became unresponsive.  The child was taken to Osceola Regional Medical Center and later transported to Arnold Palmer hospital with life threatening injuries.  The infant remains on life support at the Arnold Palmer Hospital.

Doctors confirmed the infant had serious injuries, including possible brain damage and fractured ribs that could not have been from an accident.

The mother told deputies her son had been sick for several days and she took him a few times to the doctor who prescribed antibiotics, but did not know he was seriously ill.  She also told deputies she did not abuse the child.

Detectives interviewed all the family members and brought Guzman in for questioning.  While Guzman denied abusing the infant, he told investigators he playfully threw the infant several times and might have used excessive force on him.

Based on the information and the evidence, a warrant was issued for Guzman who was picked up on December 8th and booked into the Osceola County Jail.
