Taxpayer-funded state welfare benefits were being paid to Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev even as the delved deeper into the world of radical anti-American Islamism, the Boston Herald reported Wednesday.

State officials have confirmed that Tsarnaev, who was killed in a fierce gun battle with police last Friday, was receiving benefits along with his wife, Katherine Russell Tsarnaev, and their 3-year-old daughter, the paper also reported.   Those benefits ended in 2012, after the couple failed to meet the income eligibility requirements.

Both Tsarnaev’s parents also received benefits and accused brother bombers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan were recipients through their parents when they were younger, according to the state.

In light of this new information, questions are being raised as to whether or not Tsarnaev’s radicalization was financed from taxpayer money.
