Supporters of same-sex marriage blasted Attorney General Pam Bondi for asking a federal judge to keep the ban on gay marriage in place.

Despite the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision not to hear appeals from five states seeking to prohibit gay and lesbian unions, Bondi’s filing on Friday stated that, there was a “great public interest” in keeping the state’s marriage laws in place at this time.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision, the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida, along with lawyers representing same-sex couples, asked a federal judge in Tallahassee to allow same-sex marriages.

In summer, U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle had earlier ruled that Florida’s ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional, but stayed the ruling until other cases nationwide were resolved.

Supporters of same-sex marriage blasted Bondi’s latest maneuver on Friday.  And her Democratic opponent George Sheldon dubbed her as out of touch.

“Pam Bondi’s commitment to discrimination – reinforced again by her new filing against marriage equality in Federal court – puts her out of line with contemporary public values and basic decency,” said Sheldon in a statement.
