Boating Accident Leaves 2 Girls Injured, One Airlifted to ORMC

Two young girls were taken to hospital on Sunday, following a boating accident on a lake near the intersection of Lake Ola Drive and Lakeside Avenue in Mt. Dora, Orange County Sheriff’s deputies said.  One of the injured girls, 10 years old, was airlifted to ORMC with serious head injuries.

According to OCSO:

At 1:56 PM today the Orange County Sheriff’s Office responded to a boating accident near the intersection of Lake Ola Drive and Lake Avenue in Tangerine, Florida, that resulted in injuries to two young girls.

Investigators from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Marine and Agricultural Unit determined that a 16-year-old was driving a boat on a lake towing a tube.  The driver of the boat apparently made a sharp turn to avoid another boat causing the tube, with the two girls on it, to strike the other boat.

The more seriously injured of the pair, a ten-year-old girl, was airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center where she is being treated for a serious head injury.  The 13-year-old girl was taken to a local hospital with a badly bruised arm.

According to deputies, the accident remains under investigation, although it has been determined that the boat’s driver has a state boating certificate and could legally operate the watercraft.

Deputies have not released the names of the girls or the driver of the boat.
