The state Board of Education has scheduled an Oct. 8 meeting to discuss a federal judge’s ruling that Florida is violating the constitutional rights of American-born children of illegal immigrants by forcing them to pay higher tuition rates than other state college and university students.
A notice posted on the state Department of Education website indicates the board will go into a “closed” session, which is allowed under state law if discussions are limited to litigation.
The meeting will be held at an Orlando hotel.
U.S. District Judge K. Michael Moore ruled Aug. 31 that Florida has improperly required children of illegal immigrants to pay out-of-state tuition rates, which are higher than the tuition ordinarily charged to students who are Florida residents. Though they are the children of illegal immigrants, the students involved in the case are American citizens.
