Blowin’ Smoke, Sayin’ Nothin’

State Rep. Joe Saunders – center

This morning’s WMFE interview with newly elected State Rep. Joseph Saunders was a real treat for the narcissistically inclined.

In fact, it was so good, I couldn’t turn away as I subjected myself to the self-promoting, bombastic claims of the new kid in Tallahassee and the many, seemingly countless accomplishments of his less than storied career in Florida politics.

Going on and on, Rep. Saunders fancies himself as the great white hope of his minority-majority district, as he carefully offends and avoids with that special kind-a-something, all too familiar to minorities who easily recall just how unimportant their needs and concerns are in Tallahassee.

But, after a few weeks in office, he may be onto something when he claims that, throughout his career, he’s always brought people together, despite being considered fake, arrogant and shallow.

Well known for his fundraising prowess, Rep. Saunders raked in nearly a half million dollars in his bid to represent the unemployed, low-income service workers and UCF students of his new district. The folks in Union Park are mightily impressed, but can’t figure out which of their neighbors donated so heavily to him.

Hearing the litany of promises he claims he will deliver to his peeps and the state of Florida, one may forget that the state legislature is overwhelmingly Republican-dominated. Saunders always fails to mention the fact none of these wonderful pieces of legislation have much of a chance to even make it out of committee, let alone get a floor vote.

Unless of course he has already formed a big money pact with GOP members in Tally.

Like diarrhea, but unlike Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease , The “All About Joe” show will pick back up again soon when Rep. Saunders opens his mouth. Stay tuned and pay attention.

Some quick advice for the newcomer: talk less, listen more, and always remember, this isn’t about you. It’s about serving the people.

  1. This article reminds me of a drunk email I got from my ex-boyfriend a few years back. What triggered his tantrum was the fact that it was clear I was doing well while he was not, which he couldn’t stand. It looks like the same dynamics are at work here. What’s SAD is that my belligerent ex’s message didn’t have to go thru an editor before his bitter rumblings were published. This message did go thru an ‘editor’ and yet the jealousy and delusion are even more obvious.
