The City of Orlando recently celebrated the completion of the first phase of turning a blighted hotel on West Colonial Drive into an “affordable” apartment complex.
The Palm Gardens Apartments project is One Stop Housing’s newest Orlando community, who said this “will be an affordable workforce housing community for anyone living on a tight budget.”
The apartments are rented unfurnished. According to One Stop Housing, studio apartments are starting at $900/month for 252-324 sq. ft. and limited 504 sq. ft. 1-bedroom apartments are starting at $1,195/month. Electric, water, and garbage removal are included utilities.
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said he was “proud” to offer One Stop Housing support to make the transformation possible, and he was joined by City Commissioners Robert Stuart, Tony Ortiz and Bakari Burns to celebrate. The City provided more than $4 million through the Accelerate Orlando initiative, using funds from President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan Act.
Mayor Dyer said the project will help address “two of our community’s most daunting challenges,” which are homelessness and affordable housing.
He said “some” of the 150 units will be reserved for permanent supportive housing for individuals experiencing homelessness.
