Bipartisanship: U.S. House Takes Out the Trash, Expels Rep. Santos

In a rare act of bipartisanship in Congress these days, the U.S. House took the historic action to expel Republican Representative George Santos. He is only the sixth lawmaker to be ousted from the House.

To expel a member of the U.S. House, it requires two-thirds of the majority vote to succeed. In an overwhelming show of support for the resolution, it passed 311 to 114, with 105 Republicans voting kick out a member of their own party and joining congressional Democrats. However, all of the top GOP House leaders voted against the expulsion of Rep. Santos.

The New York Republican has faced political and criminal accusations regarding ethics violations since he arrived on Capitol Hill. Rep. Santos has pleaded not guilty to 23 federal charges, ranging from COVID-19 unemployment benefits fraud, to misusing campaign funds and lying about his personal finances on official House disclosure reports.

Now, New York Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, will call for a special election so that the district can have new representation.
