Belle Isle Mayor Against New Fire Department

In a somewhat surprising letter, Belle Isle Mayor Bill Brooks stated clearly he wants to “immediately supsend consideration” of creating a new Belle Isle Fire Department. The recent controversial issue erupted in this Orange County community when the city moved to end their Orange County Fire and Emergency Medical Services agreement.

Orange County currently provides fire and emergency medical services to Belle Isle residents and a feasibility study recently showed that the new fire department would essentially cost the same amount, while only providing the community with one fire truck and a limited staff.

“When the city began evaluating the initiative of starting a fire department, I then stated publicly that the only way to move forward with such an initiative would be if the alternative would provide the same or improved service at the same or more efficient cost,” said Mayor Brooks in the letter. “With the information we have been presented, I am not convinced that this is possible by starting a Belle Isle Fire Department.”
