Avalon Elementary Receives Prestigious National Award

Orange County Public Schools, an “A”- rated district three years in a row, adds another National Blue Ribbon School to its list. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan recognized Avalon Elementary School as a 2010 national winner. The award honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools whose students achieve at very high levels or have made significant progress. A Blue Ribbon School also closes gaps in achievement especially among disadvantaged and minority students.

Avalon Elementary is among only 254 public schools and 50 private schools in the nation to receive the award this year. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said, “Schools honored with the Blue Ribbon Schools award are committed to achievement and to ensuring that students learn and succeed.  Their work reflects the conviction that every child has promise and must receive a quality education.”

Pamela Sanders, Avalon Elementary principal said, “This is an exciting day for the Avalon Community, our students, parents, and wonderful staff. To be selected as one of the top 300 schools in the nation is such an honor.  As we say, OCPS means Success!”

Avalon Elementary will be honored in November at a ceremony in Washington where the school will receive a plaque and a flag signifying its status. To see the entire list of schools chosen for the 2010 award click here.
