An attorney was convicted of bringing cocaine into a Florida jail.
60-year-old David Casals was convicted of one count of possession of cocaine, one count of felony introduction of contraband into a county detention facility, and one count of misdemeanor introduction of contraband to a county detention facility.
The jury heard evidence that the defendant, a criminal defense lawyer, brought 28 pages of paper – containing bible verses and pictures of women – saturated with cocaine on October 24, 2021.
Immediately after the verdict, Circuit Judge James Nutt sentenced the Florida man to one year in jail, three years of probation and 300 hours of community service. Other conditions include a substance abuse evaluation and completion of any recommended treatment.
Diva Casas, chief of the Gangs, Guns & Drug Trafficking Unit, and Assistant State Attorney Danielle Grundt prosecuted the case. “We thank the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office detectives for their investigation,” the office of State Attorney Alexcia Cox said.
