ARNPs May get to Baker Act Patients

State Rep. Daphne Campbell (D-Miami)

Rep. Daphne Campbell, D-Miami, announced Tuesday that she has filed a bill giving advanced registered nurse practitioners, or ARNPs, the ability to involuntarily commit patients.

The measure (HB 1195) would add ARNPs to the list of medical professions who can trigger an “involuntary examination” of a patient for mental-health reasons.

“As a Registered Nurse for over 30 years, I have worked closely with ARNPs and PAs and have observed their capacity to do exemplary work,” Campbell said in a press release. “Their training and requirements are more than sufficient to initiate involuntary examinations under the Baker Act.”
